Yarn Calculator
Yarn Calculator Suite
Calculate yardage, plan your budget, and crochet with confidence — all in one place.
Whether you're planning your next crochet project, documenting a pattern, or digging through your stash wondering if you have enough yarn — accurate calculations make all the difference.
These free calculators help you estimate yardage from gauge swatches, plan project costs before buying yarn, track what you actually spent, and discover what you can make with leftover skeins. No more running out mid-project or overbuying yarn that collects dust.
💰 Cost Calculator
Two ways to use this: Planning mode helps you budget before shopping — enter the yardage your pattern requires and see exactly how many skeins to buy and what they'll cost. Tracking mode tells you the actual yarn cost of a finished project by weight. Invaluable for pricing handmade items or understanding your crafting expenses.

Skein Details
🧶 Basic Yarn Calculator
The simplest way to figure out yardage. Weigh your finished project on a kitchen scale, enter the skein details from your yarn label, and the calculator tells you exactly how many yards you used. Perfect for documenting patterns or checking if you have enough left for another row.

📏 Gauge Calculator
The most accurate method for estimating yarn needs. Crochet a gauge swatch, weigh it, and enter the stitch and row counts. This calculator uses your actual tension — not generic estimates — to predict total yardage. Essential for designing your own patterns, substituting yarn, or making custom-sized blankets and garments.

♻️ Leftover Yarn Calculator
Got a partial skein and no label? Weigh it, enter the original skein specs, and instantly see how many usable yards remain. The calculator suggests projects that match your yardage — from scarves (600+ yds) down to pom-poms (25+ yds). Also nudges you to combine colors for striped stash-busting projects.

🔍 Yarn Weight Identifier
Found a mystery skein with no label? Wrap it around a pencil, count how many wraps fit in one inch, and this tool identifies the yarn weight category. You'll also see typical gauge, recommended hook size, and what projects that weight is commonly used for.

🧵 Holding Multiple Strands
Curious what happens when you hold two or three yarns together? Select the weight of each strand and see what the combined yarn behaves like — its approximate category, gauge range, and suggested hook size. Always swatch though — fiber content and brand affect the final fabric.

🔗 Foundation Chain Calculator
Patterns often say "chain a multiple of 6 + 4" — but how many chains for your desired width? Enter your gauge, target width, and the stitch multiple. The calculator gives you the exact chain count, and shows whether a slightly smaller or larger size fits the multiple better.

📖 Understanding Yarn Weight & Yardage
Every skein of yarn has two key numbers on the label: weight (in ounces or grams) and length (in yards or meters). These two numbers create a ratio — and that ratio is the secret to every calculation on this page.
When you weigh a finished project (or a swatch), you can use the weight-to-length ratio from your yarn label to calculate exactly how much yardage you used. This method is far more accurate than trying to eyeball a half-used skein.
💡 Pro tip: Save your ball bands! Even mid-project, knowing the original specifications makes calculating yardage effortless.

💡 Pro Tips
Weigh Everything
A kitchen scale is your best friend for accurate yarn estimates.
Save Ball Bands
Labels have weight, yardage, dye lot — everything you need later.
Buy Extra
Always get 10–15% more than calculated. Running out mid-project hurts.
Match Dye Lots
Buy all skeins at once from the same lot for consistent color.
Always Swatch
Your tension is unique. A small swatch prevents big disappointments.
Texture Uses More
Cables, bobbles, and lace eat more yarn than plain stitches.
❓ Common Questions
How accurate are these calculators?
The Gauge Calculator is the most accurate because it uses your actual swatch weight and stitch count. The Project Calculator gives estimates based on average yarn usage — always add 10–15% extra. The Basic and Cost calculators are exact when you weigh your finished piece.
Why does stitch pattern affect yardage?
Different stitches use different amounts of yarn. Cables, bobbles, and post stitches use significantly more yarn than single or double crochet. Lace and mesh patterns use less. If your project has complex texture, add an extra 15–20% beyond the calculator's estimate.
Should I buy all my yarn at once?
Yes, absolutely. Yarn is dyed in lots, and different dye lots can have noticeable color differences. Use the Cost Calculator to figure out how many skeins you need, then buy them all from the same dye lot. Check the dye lot number on the ball band to match them.
Can I use these calculators for knitting too?
Yes! While we're a crochet blog, the math is the same — yarn weight, length, and gauge work identically for knitting. The Project Calculator estimates are based on average crochet usage, so knitters may want to add a small extra buffer.
